This exciting opportunity came about through the great work of SCORE. I’ve been a huge fan of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) for many years and the FREE assistance they give small business. For those who may not be familiar, SCORE is a national nonprofit organization and a resource partner of the Small Business Administration (SBA). It boasts the largest network of mentors dedicated to helping small business owners in the United States. They do great work and their mentors are terrific in giving back with their experience and wisdom gained from years of expertise in their fields.

SCORE recently held a “speed-networking” event, and it was there that I had the pleasure of meeting Tanya Hertz, a SCORE mentor and the executive director of the REC Innovation Lab. REC is an incubator located at San Diego Miramar College that supports entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds. Their mission resonated with me immediately. Brass Ring Web Design’s own mission is: “to help small businesses grow and succeed in a competitive digital world” and the REC Innovation Lab is focused on fostering high-growth startups with the same goals of empowering founders to thrive.

Our meeting felt like a fortunate alignment of missions, and I’m honored to now be a part of the REC team. My role as a mentor is to assist students with web design and digital marketing strategies that will help them put their best foot forward online. Additionally, I’ll be working closely with Tanya herself to provide support with website tasks, helping to alleviate some of the burden from her already packed schedule.

The REC Innovation Lab is much more than just an incubator. It’s a thriving community that fosters collaboration and mutual support among student founders, associates, mentors, advisors, and the broader academic team. Their strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion ensures that entrepreneurs from all walks of life have the tools and support they need to succeed. I’m excited to help nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs and contribute to this growing, impactful community.

Stay tuned for updates as I embark on this exciting new chapter with REC!
